Association & Membership

How can I become a member of the IDHA?

Go to the “Drum Horse” dropdown tab on the main page of our website and select “Registration & Membership”. Please read through the information before pressing the “Continue” button. Here you will find the New Membership Application and Membership Renewal Application. Please select the appropriate option and follow the process.

Do you have events, shows, or gatherings for Drum Horse owners?

Yes! Visit the “Events” tab on our website. Shows can be found in the dropdown menu. The IDHA is always looking for promising Drum Horse Show and Expo opportunities to sponsor. Sponsorship request forms for shows and expos can be found at the bottom of the “Shows” page.


Breed Standards & Registration

What is the IDHA breed standard?

See “Breed Standard” in the dropdown menu under the “Drum Horse” tab.

What is “Premium Drum Horse Status” and how is it achieved?

A Drum Horse may achieve Premium status by reaching a height of 16hh or greater by their 7th birthday.

How do I register my horse with the IDHA?

Go to the “Membership & Registration” dropdown tab and select “Registry.” You will find the Registration Application for members and the Registration Application PDF for non-members. Please select the appropriate option.

Can I register my horse if it was bred outside of the USA?

Yes. Drum Horse registration is open worldwide.

Do you accept horses into the Stud Books if they are also registered elsewhere?

Yes, as long as the horse meets IDHA registration requirements.


Breeding & Ownership

At what age can a Drum Horse be evaluated for Premium status?

Once a horse reaches 16hh. There is no minimum age requirement, but the maximum age is 7 years old.

Is there a height requirement for Drum Horses?

There is no strict requirement, but 16hh or greater is preferred.

Can Drum Horses be bred to other breeds?

Yes! Drum Horses cross well with many breeds, creating versatile and athletic horses. The IDHA will soon open a Part-Bred Drum Horse Stud Book.

How do I find a reputable Drum Horse breeder?

A list of IDHA Farm Prefixes can be found under the “Registration & Membership” tab. You can also connect with other owners in Drum Horse Facebook groups, ask for references, and check breeder reputation before purchasing.

What should I look for in a Drum Horse foal?

Compare the foal to the Drum Horse Breed Standard. Assess its relatives’ conformation, movement, and temperament. Request photos and videos, and ensure the foal is well-handled and shows good movement. Consider whether its lineage supports your goals.
